Moving can be a nightmare or a dream. No matter how you choose to move your house you simply must know that your belongings are in safe hands. For most of us, our possessions are precious and costly and we prefer to find a good moving company to handle things for us. This is where things get a little tricky. In the past few years there have been several news accounts of scammers moving the contents of houses not to a new home but elsewhere, never to be seen again! If you are ready to relocate follow these tips on how to find a good moving company and set your mind at ease:
1. Always check references! Just because a man arrives on your doorstep dressed in a company uniform, carrying a clipboard doesn’t make him legitimate. This is especially so if you make use of internet-based moving companies. There have been several horror stories in the media recently related to this type of moving company. Ask for a list of prior customers and call them to ask about their experience with the removal company.
2. Ask your local real estate firms for a referral and then obtain several estimates (in writing). Do all you can think of to check out the moving company in advance. Search online to make sure the company isn’t already a known scammer. Visit the moving company and peruse their yard and their removal trucks.
Once you are satisfied with the outcome of these steps, get the following information from them:
1. The full legal company name.
2. Length of time they have been operational.
3. Full legal company address and all relevant phone numbers.
4. Their Department of Transport and any other State or Federal license numbers.
5. Ask them for references and be sure to call everybody on the list.
6. Determine if the company is insured by searching online at:

7. Call the FMCSA’s consumer complaints hotline at 1-888-368-7238. Ask about the moving company’s history.
8. Now get hold of a copy of a booklet called “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” Moving companies are legally obligated to give it you and a good moving company should have a copy on hand. Any reputable company will be happy to oblige but scammers will NOT want you to have that information. You will find an online copy at:

Before you sign ANYTHING, educate and inform yourself
Of course there are some great moving companies out there and most of them offer wonderful customer service, full insurance and great time-keeping. Not all companies are scammers. However, in the event that you do come across one who smells fishy report them to the Better Business Bureau and make sure all your neighbors, family and friends know who they are. A good moving company will be available to answer questions, happily provide a list of previous customers and spend as much time making you feel reassured as you need. Don’t get taken for a ride and lose your money and possessions because you didn’t spend the time beforehand checking them out. It is definitely worth the effort to make sure your household contents gets to the other side. Take time finding a good moving company and then sit back and relax as they do all the hard work for you!
