How to Plant an Herb Garden

Learning how to plant an herb garden is not hard to do. It just takes a little research to learn how to get the garden started properly. Herbs are used in many different ways, and growing them at home is gaining in popularity.

First Things First

Before you even start the herb garden, the first thing you need to do is to find a suitable location, whether it’s indoors or out. Most people do of course put their herb gardens outside, but many others have successfully planted a small area within their homes such as in flower boxes or something along those lines

Step 1 – Prepare the Soil
A successful herb garden requires rich soil that is very fertile. More often than not, you will have to “work” the soil for some time, “feeding” it with nutrients, keeping the weeds out and the soil loose and airy if you hope to learn how to plant a herb garden that is successful.
Herbs will actually grow under a number of different conditions, but they are much more successful and grow well when conditions are optimal. You can continue working on the soil as the herb garden is growing.

Step 2 – Start out Slow
Most people start with one or two different herbs when they are learning how to plant an herb garden. This helps them to gain experience in making the project one that is successful. From there they will branch out, adding another herb or even two the next time.
However you decide to start, get your seed and prepare the garden area. If you already have a garden in place, then this will be a breeze, but if you haven’t, then there is some work to be done.

1.First you need to run the soil. If you have a garden every year, then you will likely have a roto-tiller available, but if not, a good old-fashioned garden spade will do just fine.

2.Using the shovel, push it into the dirt and make an outline the size of the area that you wish to use for the garden.

3.Even though you won’t be planting that deep, you should dig down about 12 inches. It will make it easier for you to properly work the soil as you go along.

4.Break up any clumps. The soil should be a fine as possible. Remove any rocks that you encounter along the way as you prepare the soil.

5.Using a fertilizing product, work it into the soil as a water/fertilizer mixture. You can pick up a special sprayer that will make this a much easier task and it doesn’t cost a lot of money.

Step 3 – Plant Your Herbs
Now it’s time to get your herbs into the ground. Follow the instructions on the packet. How many seeds you actually out in an area matters, but it doesn’t have to be exact. You can add a couple of extra seeds and they will just come in a little thicker, but if they are too thick, they will “smother” one another.

Step 4 – Work the Garden
When you are first learning how to plant an herb garden, you will likely not know everything is to do unless you have been gardening for a while. That’s ok though, you’ll pick things up as you go along. The important thing is that you at least tend to the following tasks to help your garden stay healthy and thriving:

Pull the weeds regularly
Keep it watered but be careful not to over-do it
Never water when in direct sunlight. This will burn the herbs up
Fertilize according to the fertilizer manufacturer’s instructions. Over doing it can be as bad as not enough.
