How to Use Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses are many and varied and can easily be incorporated into your daily life. Essential oils can be used for many things including room fragrancing, massage, beauty care and as an insect repellent. It’s not hard to begin using volatile oils in and around the home or for health care. It can also be a lot of fun exploring the different oils and their uses.

Here are just a few aromatherapy uses:

Basic Inhalation – This is one of the most common aromatherapy uses and is very effective for treating coughs, colds, allergies and sinus problems. Place 3-4 drops of the correct essential oil on a tissue or handkerchief. Next hold the tissue close to your nose and inhale the aroma. If this is the first time you are using the oil. Use a single drop only and monitor your reactions.

Steam Inhalation – Pour two cups of boiling water into a bowl. Add 3-7 drops of essential oil to the water. If the oil is strong such as cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, pine, thyme, cajuput, etc. – use fewer drops. Position your nose 12″ away and breathe in. Avoid inhaling steam constantly and if there is any discomfort, stop. This is one of the aromatherapy uses that is effective for colds and flu.

Room Freshening and Disinfecting – One of the most practical aromatherapy uses and cost effective, too. Do the same as for a steam inhalation method but simply allow the steam to drift into the air. Use as many as 10 drops of oil unless the oil could cause irritation. You can also use an aromatherapy diffuser or lamp scent ring.

General Household Freshening – Aromatherapy uses in and around the home are many and varied. You can add some oil to the garbage can or drain, fragrance your laundry, vacuum filter or use essential oils to fragrance your drawers or bed linen. Make sure the oils are not irritating to the skin.

Insect Repellent – Citronella, lavender, and peppermint are offensive to pests. Sprinkle a few drops of these oils onto tissues or cotton balls. Put them near a doorway and window. If you have pets make sure that the oil is safe for them first. Be careful not to ruin your fixtures and fittings with strong oils. This is just one of the aromatherapy uses that is both practical and fragrant.

Massage – Use 1 ounce of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil and add up to 20 drops of oil for massage purposes. Do a skin test before using it on your whole body. Avoid the genital and eye area. Always make sure to dilute the oils first. And make sure you avoid them if they aggravate any existing health conditions or if you are pregnant. Other aromatherapy uses for beauty and health include using them in the bath or lotions and as a mouthwash.
