Using aromatherapy for high blood pressure treatment has proved to be very effective. The use of essential oils can help to enhance relaxation in patients and in so doing lower blood pressure. In one study conducted by Jolanta Basnyet, at the Natural Health Centre in Preston it was found that using aromatherapy for high blood pressure treatments was effective and resulted in lowered blood pressure. For the purposes of the study twenty patients were split into two groups.
The members of one group was given five, forty-five minute aromatherapy massage sessions using 15ml of grapeseed oil and one drop of ylang ylang, clary sage, salvia and marjoram. This was continued for six weeks. Members in the second group were given the same massage sessions but essential oils were not used. The groups were then monitored to evaluate the effects of using aromatherapy for high blood pressure treatment.
A variety of massage techniques were used in the study including effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), gentle friction, vibration and feathering. Once the study was over the patients in the group receiving the aromatherapy for high blood pressure experienced had a lowered blood pressure in 7/10. In the patients who received massage only the rate was 6/10.
It was also found that in the group that received aromatherapy vs. ordinary massage the pulse rates were lower than in those in the control group. Thus it would seem that using aromatherapy for high blood pressure treatment holds great promise. While massage alone will also help to improve the rates of high blood pressure in affected patients the addition of essential oils seems to enhance its therapeutic benefits.
High blood pressure can cause serious health effects including heart attack, stroke, diabetes and kidney problems. Patients with high blood pressure need to take immediate steps to lower it to help avoid these serious health impacts. This includes taking regular exercise, avoiding stress, smoking and foods like salt and red meat. Aromatherapy for high blood pressure symptoms can also be incorporated.
If you have high blood pressure it is important to remember that certain essential oils may actually raise the blood pressure. This means that you should never use an oil unless you know it is not contra-indicated for high blood pressure. Ideally, you should see a qualified aromatherapist who will be able to guide you in the correct use of aromatherapy for high blood pressure.
Always talk to your doctor before using aromatherapy for high blood pressure. Never ever replace your medication with aromatherapy, unless your doctor is in agreement. Remember that best results will be obtained by making sure you also incorporate the important lifestyle changes listed above, in particular avoiding smoking.
An appropriate exercise program and healthy diet will also go a long way towards helping lower your blood pressure. Before using aromatherapy for blood pressure treatment have a reading taken. After a few weeks see your doctor to establish whether the treatment is helping.
