Aromatherapy massage is a safe and gentle way to take advantage of the therapeutic properties of essential oils. All essential oils have a range of characteristics that make them effective for treating certain conditions. Apart from the massage itself the oils will help to stimulate, relax, energize or balance the body, mind or emotions.
The effect of aromatherapy massage will depend on the essential oils chosen as well as the type of massage given. The best bet is to combine relaxing oils with calming massage strokes or an energizing, vigorous massage with a rejuvenating oil as an example. Before beginning aromatherapy massage it is important to learn how to use essential oils safely and correctly.
You should never use essential oils undiluted on the skin. Always mix your aromatherapy oils into suitable carrier oils before you use them. Also remember, that while most essential oils are safe to use, some can cause skin sensitivity or photosensitivity (reactions which are aggravated by sun exposure). The oils are very concentrated so a little goes a long way and can be damaging to the skin if applied directly for aromatherapy massage.
Carrier oils act as a vehicle for the application of essential oils. A variety of oils is available and indeed these oils also contain beneficial properties. This means that they can be tailored to suit specific skin conditions like dry, oily or irritated skin. Almond oil is very commonly used as a carrier oil for aromatherapy massage. It is absorbed easily, soothes dry skin and does not have an odor, it also lasts longer than other oils.
Apricot kernel oil is a light oil that contains vitamin A and is great for using on the face for dry, older skin. Avocado oil is heavier and nutrient rich, it also works to soothe dry, aging and sensitive skins. Evening Primrose oil is used to treat eczema and psoriasis. Grapeseed oil is a light, oil that works well on oily skins. Wheatgerm oil contains vitamins A, B, C and E. It acts to tone and firm the skin and fade blemishes and scar tissue or stretch marks with repeated aromatherapy massage.
For the massage fill a container halfway (about 1oz) and add 12-15 drops of essential oil. Shake the container. You may use one oil or up to three oils in a blended preparation. You are ready for the aromatherapy massage! It is better to mix smaller quantities as some oils might not keep well. If you do keep oils store them in a cool, dark place and make sure they are labeled!
There are many books available that can teach you how to give a therapeutic aromatherapy massage. Try to master the general techniques as well as techniques for certain ailments, like anxiety, muscle tenderness and headaches. Remember that certain oils are contra-indicated in certain conditions. These include circulation disorders, blood pressure problems, asthma, pregnancy, epilepsy and heart disease. Always take a history before you begin!
