Wicca rituals and preparation for rituals are usually done methodically following a step-by-step process designed to calm and ground the person. Depending on the Wicca tradition that is followed the steps for performing rituals may vary. Wicca rituals are generally carried out according to the personal preference of the Wicca and the specific situation.
Here are the basic steps for Wicca rituals and preparation for rituals:
Wicca rituals and preparation for rituals often starts with cleansing. Sage, saltwater, sounding or incense are used to purify the body and mind as well as the area that will be used for the ritual. Some Wiccas use the tree of life meditation, yoga, drumming, breathing, sound and movement to help ground them in preparation for the ritual.
Wicca rituals and preparation for rituals should always be performed after steps have been taken to free yourself of metal clutter, distractions and stressors. If you are stressed you will not be able to embrace the ritual properly. Once you are open to the ritual you will be ready to connect to the earth’s energy.
Wicca rituals and preparation for rituals often begin by Casting the Circle. Here an athame (black handled knife), crystal, finger, sound or visualization is used to define your personal sacred space and focus your energy. A pentacle is then drawn in the air in each direction, using the tools mentioned above. As you cast the circle, return to the direction where you began. Then ground the energy in the center as the circle is completed.
The next step in Wicca rituals is to invoke the earth’s directions and elements. This involves summoning the east (air), south (fire), west (water), north (earth) and enter (balance). Wiccas use their own words, movement, song, or physical manifestations (i.e., dipping the fingers in water to invoke west) or drums to invoke the elements.
This step is followed by the invocation of the Goddess and God. This is done by choosing a characteristic of the Goddess and/or God that is appropriate for the Wicca rituals. Depending on the Wicca tradition that is followed, only the Goddess (e.g. in Dianic Wicca) may be invoked. Other traditions invoke both God and Goddess or non-sexed spirits or forces.
Wicca rituals might invoke a goddess of justice (Athena) for a reversal spell or a god of the forest for environmental protection. Gods can be invoked using words, silent meditation, dance or song or in any way that feels comfortable to the Wicca.
The intention of Wicca rituals is very important. Each ritual and preparation for rituals should have a clear intention. World peace, personal healing, spell work, celebration of a holiday or moon phase, meditation, initiation are common intentions. The statement of intention can be a craft, a meditation, or a poem/written statement.
Next the Cone of Power is raised or drumming, dancing, singing or visualization is used to energize the ritual. Focus energy on the intent to realize your wish. Once this step is complete you will need to devoke the Gods and/or Goddesses that you have invoked for the Wicca rituals and ritual preparation. Thank them as well as the elements and open the circle.
Most Wiccas believe that you should eat after Wicca rituals. This helps to keep you grounded. Even a simple meal of cheese and bread and crackers is helpful to keep you centered. Prepare your snack before you begin your ritual so it’s ready once you are finished.
