Wicca ritual items are used in rituals and ceremonies to help focus energy and intent. A variety of objects is used during rituals for example the altar, athame, bolines, candles, incense as well as wands, chalices, cauldrons, bells and the magic circle. Let’s have a look at some Wicca ritual items that are most commonly used and their significance to the Wicca performing the ritual
* The Wiccan Altar – A altar is used during rituals and is usually placed within a magic circle, facing north. When it is not being used it may be placed at the north point of the circle. Some Wiccas place these Wicca ritual items at the east point or facing east in harmony with the rising sun and moon. Altars are usually erected for Wicca rituals and put away afterwards due to space constraints. Altars are often rectangular but circlular altars are also favored.
A range of Wicca ritual items is usually placed on the altar, for example a chalice (cup), pentacle, bell, crystals, cauldron, broom, censer, wand, athame, boline, offering bowl, candles, Goddess and God images, bowls of water and salt, flowers and herbs. Altar cloths are used to cover the altar and also used for covering other Wicca ritual items like crystal balls to stop the diffusion of energy.
* The Athame – Athames are Wicca ritual items (knives) that are used for ceremonies and not usually any other purpose (cutting physical objects). Athames are black-handled knives with a double-edged blade. Bolines are white-handled knives used for cutting herbs and candles for rituals.
* Cauldrons – Cauldrons are Wicca ritual items that represent the Goddess. Cauldrons are often placed on the altar and can be used in cooking or rituals. Chalices hold water and represent the water earth element. They may also be used to hold wine during a ritual. They symbolize the Goddess and are made of wood, stone, glass or metal.
* Candles and incense holders – These are Wicca ritual items used to hold candles and incense during a ritual ceremony. Offering bowls are used to provide an offering to Goddess and God.
* Brooms – These are Wicca ritual items that gave rise to the archetype of a witch flying on her broom. In reality, brooms are used to sweep the circle and jumped over during handfastings (weddings).
* Bells and wands – These Wicca ritual items symbolize the Goddess and are often used to call upon spirits. Wands are used to create magical energy when performing rituals. Wands can be wooden and are often various shapes and sizes. The wand is used to focus energies and make effective magic.
* Statues – Statues can be used to represent Goddesses and Gods, elements or people, depending on the preference of the Wicca. Mead flasks are Wicca ritual items that are made of metal. They are used to hold mead or wine, often during outdoor rituals.
* Pentacles – Pentacles are Wicca ritual items that represent the earth element or Goddess Kore. A pentacle is a five pointed star. It is often inscribed on a round, flat piece of clay, metal or wood. During a ceremony ritual items that are to be blessed are placed on the pentacle.
* The Book of Shadows – This is a collection of spells and rituals kept by a witch or coven. It is basically record of magical workings. These Wicca ritual items can be created in a hard-bound blank book or it can be a notepad, folder of loose papers, a computer file or even a website.
Some Wiccas feel that Wicca ritual items should be kept secret and only shared with the initiated coven members.
