What is Wicca Divination

Wicca divination is viewed as an art and a science by a Wicca. When a Wicca practices divination they are in contact with a greater power, or divinity i.e. the God or Goddess. Wiccas practice divination to obtain guidance, information or answers to questions about their everyday lives.

Wicca divination practices make use of a range of different tools, for example the Tarot, runes, I-Ching, astrology, palmistry, pendulums, handwriting, dreamwork, crystal gazing, hydromancy, dice throwing, reading tea leaves and others specific to each Wicca. Divination is most commonly used to find out information about the likely outcome of spells and rituals.

To practice Wicca divination one must first believe in the Divine and one’s own brain. These two elements are essential for practical, successful divination practices. The majority of divination practices are used to divine information for protection and healing. But what is divination?

Divination is not the same as being able to tell the future. Instead Wicca divination can provide clues or guidance as to what the future may bring for an individual – presuming that he or she stays on the same path.

Beginner Wiccas should be aware that Wiccas who claim to be able to see the future are not practicing honest divination. To a Wicca, the future cannot be seen, because it has not happened yet. What your future will be is determined by your actions in the present and can change at any time. Wicca divination is always subject to the correct ethical principles.

This means that before a Wicca practices divination they should obtain permission. Using Wicca divination to “spy” on the life of another is not encouraged.

Can anybody use divination tools and practices? Yes. Anybody can learn Wicca divination, because anybody can make a connection with the Divine if they so choose. Wiccas believe that some are better at using divination that others but that the gifts from the Divine are accessible to all. Wicca divination skills improve with time and experience as a spiritual and mental discipline.

While many Wiccas can divine using only their minds, the use of Tarot cards in Wicca divination is a common practice. Tarot cards are decks of cards used to indicate a possible future path for an individual. The Waite deck is commonly used but you can also use playing cards. Each card has a picture printed on it and the reader shuffles the deck or asks the subject to shuffle the deck. The cards are laid out in a specific pattern and interpreted.

Runes are common tools for Wicca divination. Runes are ancient alphabet symbols often derived from the Germanic or Norse alphabets. Runes are stones printed with these symbols and the symbols have meaning to the Wicca doing the divination. The stones are “thrown” and the way in which they land is used to do an interpretive reading.

The I-Ching has oriental origins and is also used in Wicca divination. The I-Ching makes use of six different coins. Each coin must have two different sides. The coins are shuffled according to a specific method and thrown onto a surface. The way in which the coins land indicates how the coins should be read. The side on which each coin falls is important in the divination.

Pendulums are used in Wicca divination and are any weighted object at the end of a string or a chain. The way in which the pendulum swings is used to divine information or answers to a question.

Astrology also forms part of Wicca divination practices and it is believed that the stars, moons and planets have an influence on people’s lives. How the heavenly bodies are placed will exert an influence on a person’s life. The way in which these element are placed can be used to determine their influence on a person and the astrologer will be able to interpret this for an individual.

Crystal Gazing is a Wicca divination tool which is used to produce a form or clairvoyant hypnosis that helps the Wicca to see visions that can help guide the person in their future path.
