The very idea of re-decorating may be a nightmare for some people, especially when it comes to removing wall paper.
Removing wall paper can be an extremely unpleasant task, especially if someone is not completely sure of how to do it properly. It can be extremely hard work scraping the walls to get rid of all of that wall paper and often it does not always go according to plan. Some people would much rather pay someone else to do it, but surely it is cheaper to do it yourself?
By doing things correctly and having the right equipment on hand, removing wallpaper is actually easier than you think.
So how do you successfully remove wallpaper?
Try following some of these steps and see if it makes a difference in how easy or hard the task is.
First, it is a wise idea to get rid of everything in the working area such as furniture, shelving, nails, etc. and then cover the floors with a tarp or mat of some sort. This helps to collect the wallpaper that has been stripped from the walls.
Now you should pick either a corner or an edge of the wallpaper and then start to peel it off. You can use anything you want to help, whether you use your hands, a knife, or a scraper. You may find that the wallpaper is coming off easily as some wallpaper is designed like this.
A lot of people find though that they may take the front of the wallpaper off, but the backing of it may still remain. This is what annoys most of us but do not fret as you can do something about it. What you need to do is get some plain water and mix it with a household soap of some sort and then apply it to the walls. You may have to do this more than once, but this should be adequate enough for you to easily scrape or peel the paper away.
If you do not want to do any of this, you can always use a wallpaper steamer, but a word of caution to follow is that it can get really hot so you will need to be careful!
After you have used the steamer, you can then use your hands to peel it off or you can use a scraper or knife to make it even easier. You may want to use sand paper to get rid of anything that may be left behind.
Sometimes the paper will actually resist your efforts at trying to strip it so in this instance you can use a coarse sandpaper to help you out. If you do decide to use a wallpaper remover, it is a good idea to wear the right equipment as the fumes may cause an irritation to your lungs. Also it is a good idea to keep the room well ventilated at all times.
By using some of these tips, it should help to make the task of stripping the wall paper off a bit easier as it can be an extremely frustrating task.
