Either your mother, grandmother or aunt probably owned a quilt.
In days gone by the basics of quilting were taught to young girls at an early age. These days many people still quilt and this guide on how to learn the basics of quliting will show you how!
What is a quilt?
A quilt is a blanket or 'throw' or even a pillow made up of several squares of fabric sewn together in various designs or shapes. Each block is made up of three layers sewn together - an outer layer (the part we can see), and inner layer of padding (making the quilt soft and snuggly) and a third, bottom layer to hold it all together.
Once you have mastered the basics of quilting you will find it an enjoyable and creative way to make useful things for your home.
Each square is sewn individually and then several squares are sewn together thus adding more and more until the quilt is the right size for your needs.
There are two main styles or types of quilting - the kind you saw on your grandma's bed i.e. traditional quilts and the kind you may see in a craft gallery. These are called contemporary quilts or art quilts and were popularized in the 1960's and 70's. Whatever the reason you want to try quilting and whatever road you choose, quilting is an art that requires patience and the love of hand-making beautiful things.
Quilting Equipment You Will Need
Hint: Before spending money on sewing supplies, check with family and friends to see if they have any that you could borrow. In the unlikely event that you really don't enjoy the experience you won't have spent too much money. If you do buy your own make sure you buy the right tools or you will find it very frustrating and won't do a good job either. The basics of quilting are simple.
