Learning the basics of knitting means you need to understand the basics of the equipment you will use.
Straight knitting needles are the type most often used and are good for beginners. They come in aluminum, plastic or wood and range in size from 0 (2mm) which is the smallest to 15 (10mm) and even larger. Knitting needles are sold in pairs and come in 10" or 14" lengths. The knob at the end of the needle prevents your stitches from slipping off.
Projects like sweaters or Afghans can be worked in a tube without a seam and you will be able to use circular knitting needles. Circular knitting needles are long flexible needles with points at both ends. Socks and mittens without seams make use of double-pointed knitting needles. These come in a set of four and have points at each end.
The Basics of Knitting
Ok, that's enough about needles and yarn. Let's get knitting!
Lesson 1: Make a Slip Knot
Your very first slip knot and step one in the basics of knitting:
1. With your yarn ball in hand grasp the end of the thread and choose a 'tail' length. At this point make a loop. The yarn should form an 'X'.
2. Take hold of the strand of yarn at the top of the 'X' and bring this strand behind and through the loop that has been created.
3. Pull the new loop through the old loop and pull down. You have created your slip knot.
