Wicca spells and magical charms are not used to "conjure" as many people mistakenly assume. Instead, a spell is a set of actions and prayers that are performed by a Wicca with the aim of asking for divine help with some aspect of their lives. In this way, Wicca spells and incantations are similar to Christian prayers.
Wiccas practice spells as one of their cornerstone beliefs. However, not all Wiccas cast spells. Whether you want to engage in spell casting is up to you, but spells typically form part of the activities of traditional Wiccas. When a spell is used it has the potential to either harm or help others. This means that spells fall into two categories namely good (or healing) spells and evil spells. Wicca spells are never used to harm another person.
This belief is a part of the Wicca belief system and is based on the Wiccan Threefold Law i.e. "All good that a person does to another returns three-fold in this life; harm is also returned three-fold." and the Wiccan Rede i.e. "An it harm none, do what thou wilt." Or as long as it harms nobody, do what you wish. It follows, therefore, that Wicca spells can never be used to harm the Wicca or anybody else.
Wicca spells that get revenge on others, manipulate people or attempt to make others fall in love with them are strictly prohibited by Wiccan rules. While evil witches do exist in the world today, their numbers are very few indeed. There are also those who call themselves Wiccas and cast spells for financial gain. These are not true Wiccas. Satanists also cast spells but are not bound by the Wiccan Rede.
So what are Wicca spells all about then? The spells that a Wicca may choose to cast vary. However no spell may be cast that tries to dominate, manipulate or control another person without their expressed wishes. So a love spell cannot be performed if its intent is to make the other person fall in love with them.
Wicca spells that seek to make a specific person more open to love in their life are also seen as negative and manipulative. This is because the person may not wish to be in a love relationship at this time. However if permission is first obtained then the spell may be cast for the other person. Wicca spells that aim at opening the heart of the Wicca are allowable since this kind of spell harms nobody and fulfills the guidelines of the Wiccan Rede.
How are Wicca spells cast? Before any Wicca casts a spell they must think through all the possible repercussions. They need to be absolutely sure that the spell is not manipulative in any way. In terms of Wiccan beliefs, spells are seen as holding power to change the course of the universe. For this reason they must be taken very seriously.
There are many different kinds of Wicca spells. Spells may be simple using few words and actions or involve more complex rituals. These rituals may include casting a circle, invoking a deity, making a purpose statement, working the spell, meditation, thanking the Gods and Goddesses and closing the circle again.
However for most Wicca spells four main steps should be followed:
1) To know (yourself, what is to be accomplished)
2) To will (belief in yourself, Divinity, your skills, practicing)
3) To dare (to change circumstances, environment)
4) To be silent (before the spell, and afterwards)
Wicca spells are usually adapted depending on who is casting them. In this way the spells reflect the personality, thoughts of the person and the situation.
